Thin Layer Chromatography utilizes a glass or metal plate coated with a thin layer of absorbent material such as silica gel. The sample is prepared similiarto paper chromatography and a solvent is used to elute the sample.

1. Which is the stationary phase? Plate   Silica Gel    Solvent

2. Which is the mobile phase? Plate   Silica Gel    Solvent

3. Which component is inert? Plate   Silica Gel    Solvent

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. In TLC Stationary phase wont be react with material but physically absorbed the material and gives platform to sovent and material to run over it. So, silica gel is the stationary phase because it absorb the material by physical attraction (due to polarity) and at the same time it gives runway to the material along with solvent for elution.

2. Mobile phase that which carry the eluent or material along with them. In TLC solvent is the mobile phase it elute the material.

3. All three component i,e., Plate, silica gel and solvent are chemically inert, they wont take part any chemical reaction during TLC anaysis.

Thin layer chromatography in the organic chemistry typically uses a glass plate coated with silica gel, which serves as the stationary phase. The mobile phase in the experiment is an organic solvent or mixture of organic solvents. The mobile phase pulls the organic material(s) being analyzed up the plate by dissolving them in the solution. So, the more something dissolves in the mobile phase the further up the plate it moves. The mobile phase in this experiment will involve which...
