Bone marrow aspiration procedure;
These are the procedures that help to collect the spongy tissue
inside the larger bones and examine it.
In bone marrow aspiration procedure, a needle is used to
withdraw a sample of the fluid portion. This procedure can show
whether the bone is healthy or not and whether it has normal amount
of bloood cells, It is a procedure used to diagnose any diseases
including cancers and fever of unknown origin.
Indications;
- Anemia
 
- blod cell condtions in which too few or too many types of blood
cells are produced
 
- cancers of the blood and bone marrow
 
- cancers that have spread from another area into the bone
marrow
 
- hemochromatosis
 
- fevers of unknown origin
 
Nursing interventions; pre;
- explain the procedure to the patient
 
- if ordered, a mild sedative can be given
 
- explain to the patient that it will take only 5 to 10 minutes
to finish the procedure.
 
- a blood sample should be collected before the procedure
 
- should have a signed informed consent
 
- check the patient for hypersensitivity to the local
anaesthethic
 
- tell the patient the exact area of aspiration.

- arrange all the necessary articles to the bedside of the
patient
 
- help the patient to be in a comfortable possition.
 
- assist the doctor who is doing the procedure

- after the procedure, provide proper pressure to the cocnerned
site to prevent bleeding
 
- clean the biopsy site and apply sterile dressing
 
- monitor the patient;s vital signs
 
- check the biopsy site for any infections
 
Interpretation of findings;
- yellow marrow contains fat cells and connective tissue
 
- red marrow conatins hematopioetic cells, fat cells and
connective tissue
 
- the iron satin measures hemosiderin has a +2 level
 
- sudan black B satin shows granulocyte is negative
 
- periodic acid shiff stain detects glycogen reaction is
negative
 
client education;
client should be told that if they have any bleeding disorder,
then it should be informed to the healthcare worker
