Continuous bladder irrigation: Description of Procedure, Indications, Interpretation of Findings, CONSIDERATIONS, Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post), Potential Complications, Client Education, Nursing Interventions.
Continous bladder irrigation: it is a continous infusion of sterile solution in to the urinary bladder using a three way irrigation system with a tripple lumen catheter , to remove loose tissue,clot and mucous shreds from the bladder.
Indications : Acute urinary retention due to blood clot, chronic obstruction that causes hydronephrosis, hygienic care of bedridden patients, intermittent decompression for neurogenic bladder.
Intrerpretation of findings : discomfort with catheter in place, bloody urine at the starting of irrigations.
considerations: procedure shouldnot be done without written order, as far as possible bladder irrigation are to be avoided, practice strict aseptic technique, wash hands before and after procedure.
Pre- nursing intervention: Check for doctors order, inform the patient, arrange articles, provide comfortable position, hand washing, provide privacy, expose only the area.
intra- nursing intervention: Maintain aseptic technique, follow all the steps, arrange the flow rate for continous bladder irrigation.Make sure the fluid is coming back.
Post- nursing intervention: Clean the area properly, replace all the articles, regular catheter care to be provided, watch for contraindications, record and report the procedure.
potential complications: infections,tissue trauma, urethral irrigation, bladder spasm.
Client education: Patient may experience some discomfort with the catheter in place its a normal thing, educate the client regarding urine color changes it may look bloody at starting and as the irrigation continous urine become clear, bladder irrigation can be stopped once the urine is completely clear for 1-2 days.
Nursing considerations: assess the outflow volume correctly, assess outflow for blood clots or changes in appereance, document in the patient record regarding procedure, significant nursing observations and amount of fluid instilled and drained.
