What factors do you think contribute to the disparities in health among ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender groups in your country? What diseases are the most stigmatized? Which are the least? Is this different in different cultures or social classes?
In my country(India)0, it has been seen that the disparities in health among ethnic , socioeconomic and gender groups is due to the presence of lack of adequate funds for the purpose of healthcare along with the presence of corruption in many of the regions. It can be seen that although healthcare is available to all, the quality various between these groups which further widens the gap of disparities that already exists. The diseases that are mostly stigmatized includes sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS and genetic disorders such as mental retardation. The least stigmatized includes includes common communicable diseases such as typhoid, cholera etc. This is different between different cultures and social classes as well, where Individuals with a higher level of education and awareness tend to seek treatment for mental disorders at a larger rate when compared to Individuals of a lower educational status and conservative cultures.
