Discuss the impact of race, gender, and socioeconomic status on physical and psychological health. To what extent should individuals be held responsible for their health and actions if these are shaped by their opportunities and circumstances?
The race, gender, and socio-economic status has a major influence on the physical and psychological health of the individuals. As these factors act as a barrier to receive proper medical attention and to have access for their physical ailments. They gender and racial bias prevents them from getting proper treatment for their ailments, the problem worsens with low socio-economic status. The stress due to the discrimination combined with difficult life situations make minorities and marginalized prone to many psychological disorders. They are more prone to develop PTSD, substance and alcohol abuse and dependence, severe form of schizophrenia etc.
Individuals should be aware of the disparities and discrimination shown to them while attending them. If they feel they are neglected they should report such incidents. Acknowledging, accepting, and striving for the equality on the part of individuals is necessary, instead of being passive and be victimized. Thus, they could impact the health care system positively in their favor.
