What is schizophrenia? How is it diagnosed? How is schizophrenia distinguished from other disorders within the schizophrenic spectrum?
Schizophrenia involves a range of problems with thinking, behavior or emotions. Delusions, hallucinations or disorganized speech leading to impairment in the ability to function are the usual symptoms.
Diagnosis of schizophrenia involves distinguishing from other disorders within the schizophrenic spectrum and determining that symptoms are not due to substance abuse, medication or a medical condition.
Physical exam; to rule out other problems leading to the symptoms
Tests and screenings to rule out conditions with similar symptoms, and screening for alcohol and drugs. Imaging studies, such as an MRI or CT scan.
Psychiatric evaluation; to check the mental status by observing appearance and demeanor and asking about thoughts, moods, delusions, hallucinations, substance use, and potential for violence or suicide. A discussion of family and personal history is also done.
