For long, mental illnesses were considered to be possessed by evil spirits and received brutal treatment from the society. They were chained, secluded and often beaten to death. In the middle ages, they were mocked, ignored and ridiculed. When the field of psychology started to develop, there was some understanding that it’s not evil spirit but a physical and mental condition. Although the field of psychology improved and brought sea of changes in the treatment levels and therapies, the society remained almost the same. The mindset about mental illness is still negative. People with mental disabilities such as schizophrenia are bullied, ridiculed and mentally and physically abused in the society. The awareness about mental illness in the schools is very minimum, so not many children know that they should treat people with mental illnesses with respect and consideration. Only when this support system develops, people with mental illnesses will come forward, accept that they have some problem and help those who are affected.
