Explain what it’s like for a person diagnosed with Schizophrenia, when they are being bombarded by stimuli.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • We are all bombarded with a lot of stimuli from our environment, which we selectively pay attention to and then process but people with schizophrenia have reduced capacity for selective attention because of which they are practically flooded with incoming sensory data which included irrelevant stimuli as well.
  • People with schziophrenia thus feel swamped by the incoming tide of impressions to the point where they fail to distinguish between what is real and what is imaginary. That is why they experience bizzare delusions and hallucinations and find it difficult to control such thoughts. Its an overwhelming experience for them which they are unable to control.
  • This bombardment of stimuli is amplified in intensity for them. Its like being at a noisy party and simultaneously hearing all the conversations, rather than listening selectively to just one or two like how a normal person does.Too much noise and hotch potch is happening in ther brains.
