There were no existing political parties when George Washington assumed office in 1789. Washington also released a speech opposing the rise of intensely partisan politics, as it could become a diversion from representing the people of the United States. This, however, did not deter the Pioneers from taking positions on key issues that troubled the young nation and the first political parties developed out of these disagreements. The United States is at a crossroads today. In the 2016 general race, third-party candidates won more votes than ever before.

Many in favour of the two-party system claim that, by offering democratic outlets, it will simplify politics for many Americans. In comparison, there is a historical precedent for the two-party system to work effectively in the American version of a democratic republic.

Many against the two-party system claim that fresh ideas and third-party candidates do not have enough space for it. In addition, others suggest that political dialogue is undergoing a deterioration from the extreme division that can emerge from a two-party structure between family , friends, and government officials.
