Moral development is often discussed in regards to early lifespan development. However, moral development takes place over the entire lifespan of human development. With that said, different theorists posit moral development often takes place in stages or over different periods of life. Consider the following question:

Moral development occur in stages was first highlighted by piaget who suggested 4 stages duvided broadly into two , one below 10 years where morality is largely rule based and based on consequences. While after 10 years , an abstract morality develops where person come to know that intention and individual judgement play a role in morality.

Kohlebergalso defined different stages and cirrespindingcirrespindingcmorality. He divided whole into 3 major stages over life span and not just upto adolescence as suggested by piaget. Each stage has two substage.

Kohlberg stages

1st stage moral decision are largely rule based and based in consequences. At initial substage , it is largely obedience and punishment that guide morality while at later substage , child understand there are multiple viewpoint about right and wrong.

2nd stage is characterised by a kind of morality which is governed by maintaining interpersonal relation at initial substage and maintaining social order at later substage if stage 2.

3rd stage is characterised by development of morality based on individual rights , at initial substage.

The second substage , where only 15% can reach , involves abstract morality. Here oersonalpmoral principles which are considered universal develop. One will even defy social contract or laws to abide by these self principle.
