You are participating in the customer side team in a project for the development of a new laboratory information system. Answer the two subquestions below:
A. Provide a specific list of 7 functional characteristics that this system needs to have.
B. How can hospitals improve the precision of patient identification in such laboratory systems?
A.
Answer: Laboratory information system is the use of computer software for the store, process, dissemination and manages the data of the laboratory test.
The functional characteristics that laboratory information system are
1. workflow manager: Laboratory information system act as managing the workflow in the laboratory. This automatically record all the procedure or tests done in the laboratory in the form of code of the procedure or test. This helps to easily and automatically assign the work to the technician and this system helps to use a proper machine for test to be performed. This makes there is prevention from the time wastage.
2. Sample management
while taking a sample or transferring from one place to another place, there may be mixed up of sample or not received to the laboratory. This helps to identify the sample easily as the barcode system are applied in each same. So very easy to prevent mixed up of sample.
3. reporting
The result of the test can be reported to the patient information systems by using the barcode. This helps the doctor or nurses to check the test result of the patient before getting the hardcopy.
4. ERP
It should include ERP. ERP is software used for the inventory of the items used, stored, or need to buy new. All the data regarding the inventory data can be stored in the laboratory information system for future used.
5. EHR
It is the electronic health record. In the laboratory system, there should be allowed to store the health record of the person, name of the test, bill of the test, the result of the test. The health record are stored for the future used.
B
The hospital can improve the quality of patient identification in the laboratory system by using a barcode for the test. There should be different barcodes for different procedures. The barcode should be made under patient identification. All the tests should label with the barcode of the patient. The barcode can be connected to the patient's information. This will helps to understand patient identification easily and any error or mistakes.
