Analyze the development of a project team in terms of the five-phase model or the punctuated equilibrium model. Provide specific examples from your experience of working in teams as to why the model is the best fit for explaining the development of a project team.
5 phase-forming, storming, norming, adjourning, performing.
Forming: a phase where the team members meet and learn about the project and their formal roles. Team members tend to be independent and not as open in this phase Storming: the team begins to address the project work, technical decisions, and the project management approach. If team members are not collaborative or open to differing ideas and perspectives, the environment can become counterproductive v Norming: team members begin to work together and adjust their work habits and behaviours to support the team. The team members learn to trust each other v performing: Teams that reach the performing stage function as a well-organized unit. They are interdependent and work through issues smoothly and effectively adjourning: the team completes the work and moves on from the project. This typically occurs when staff is released from the project as deliverables are completed or as part of the Close Project or Phase process.
These findings are shown in the following diagram:
Example from my work experience where this model describes the best model in coordination within project team.
EARLY STAGE/MEETING/KOC (Kick off call)
With the punctuated-equilibrium model, the general agreement of the project/team is usually outlined at the very first meeting. This often occurs by discussion of the more senior people within the group, or potentially a formally designated project manager.
Before we start the project, it is best practise that we as a project manager should have initial discussion about the project and its delivery within team (project) to avoid any disconnect to understand everyone roles and their responsibilities in context with project, like TDA (Technical Designer Association), supplier for delivery of equipment’s at site before D day, customer and stakeholder.
All kick of call with respective stakeholder including customer is a part of early stage meeting for better visibility of scope.
