Question: Which of the following is not a function of simple columnar epithelium?
Movement of embryo through uterine tube
Filtration
Absorption
Secretion of mucus
Movement of egg through uterine tube
Answer: Filtration
Simple columnar epithelium is composed of single layer of cells and have modified structures like goblet cells, microvilli and cilia at their apical surface. This type of epithelium are found in the surface of the mucous membrane that lines the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder, uterus, uterine tubes and parts of the respiratory tract. These epithelial cells function in movement, absorption or secretion of materials. eg. movement of egg/embryo in uterine tube, secretion of mucus.
Simple squamous epithelium, the thinnest type of epithelium lines the blood and lymphatic vessels,Bowman's capsule of kidney, epithelial surfaces of serous membranes and the air sacs (alveoli) of lungs. These type of epithelium facilitates exchange of materials; materials diffuse or filter across this type of tissue easily. Function in Filteration, diffusion/transport of substances, and secretion in serous membranes.
