b. How many grams (g) of penicillin would he receive in 24 hours?
Answer to sub-question a
Ordered dose - 2 tsp. every 6 hours
Converting tsp. to ml, 1 tsp. = 4.9 ml rounded to 5 ml.
Therefore 2 tsp. contains 10ml.
Each dose is 10ml of penicillin.
Penicillin is administered every 6 hours, which means 4 times a day.
Therefore 10ml x 4 times = 40ml /day.
The child receives 40ml of penicillin suspension in 24 hrs.
Answer to sub-question b.
The label states that there is 125mg of penicillin in 5ml i.e., 125mg/5ml.
The ordered dose is 2tsp. every 6 hrs.
I.e. 10ml 4 times a day.
If each 5ml contains 125mg, then 10ml will contain
125mg x 10ml ÷ 5 ml = 250mg.
Each dose is 250mg of penicillin.
Since the child is taking 40 ml per day, the total gm. of penicillin is
250mg x 40ml ÷ 10ml = 1000mg
Converting mg to gm., we get 1000mg = 1gm.
The child receives 1gm of penicillin suspension in 24 hrs.
