Metaparadigm

A metaparadigm is a set of ideas or theories that give the structure for how a discipline should work. In nursing discipline, these ideas or theories includes four fundamental concepts that consider the patient as a whole, patient's health and well-being, the patient's environment and the nursing responsibilities. Therefore there are 4 metaparadigms of nursing are present they are:

1. Person
2. Environment
3. Health
4. Nursing

Person

• This metaparadigm focuses on the patient who is the receiver of care.
• This metaparadigm also includes person’s culture, family, friends even their socioeconomic status and spirituality.

Environment

• Environment includes both internal and external factors related to the patient.
• This may include the communication patients have with visitors as well as their others in the society.

Health

Health implies to the quality and wellness of the patient. It also includes access the patient has to health care.

Nursing

• How well she applies their knowledge and skills in taking care of the patient
• It also refers to the characteristics and qualities of the nurse who is providing the care.

It is very important for the nurses to apply the knowledge of these four Metaparadigms to the nursing process when caring for patients in order to address patient care as a whole.
