Human resource planning is the process where the current and future human resources needs are identified so that an organization can meet its goals. This is a continuous process and the main objective is to ensure that best fit employees are selected for the jobs and to avoid manpower shortage.

There are internal and external factors that should be considered by a company in its HR planning. These include: -

  • The company should take into consideration the organization structure by creating an organization chart where each position can be ranked and job description should be clearly written. This can help the HR to identify the position where there is no staff members or identify the position that is not required. This can help the company to conduct the HR planning effectively.
  • Budget is important factor that should be considered because money is required to fill the positions with staff members.
  • Identifying the skill levels of current employees and providing training to them rather than hiring new employees is another important factor of HR planning. Employee development should be considered to the company's HR planning.
  • HR planning should comply with state and federal labor law and should cover all legal requirements that can be applied to the workers.
  • Government regulations influence all process of HR department like hiring, training, compensation, etc. HR planning should adhere to the government regulations as not complying with this can result the company to pay huge fines and give bad reputation to the company.
  • Economic conditions should be considered in HR planning because it help the company to know exactly what is happening around and also help them to create a plan when there is economic downturn.
  • Technological factor should be considered as development of new technologies can make the company to downsize the workforce by which they can save money.
  • Demographics of work force should also be considered as older generation will retire so human resource should look for different ways to attract new set of talents.

Planning plays important role in the successful recruitment, placement, and retention of employees and ultimately in the organization’s success. The best employees are selected so that they can contribute to organization's success. This can also contribute to workforce diversity. People with different skill sets are selected which help the organization to drive innovation. This in turn improve customer service. Diverse workforce, make the organization competitive and thus companies focus on hiring talents which will be beneficial for the organization in the long run. Diverse workforce makes both the employees and customers get accustomed to different cultures and values.
