Why, according to Whitehouse, et al., might we think that allowing the use of cognitive enhancers might result in pressures on nonusers to become users? Do you think this is a serious concern? Why or why not?
The society is constantly becoming more competent and the expectations of the society, organizations and other entities from the individuals is constantly on the rise. This would mean that the pressure to perform to the expectations have crippled most of the individuals and they seek multiple ways to enhance their cognitive abilities in terms of attention, memory, problem solving etc. According to Whitehouse, et al., the use of cognitive enhancers would force others to use them in order to stay in the competition. However, using this unnatural way to enhance the drug raises more ethical questions and would make people engage in unethical means to succeed. In my opinion, performance enhancing drugs should be banned in order to find more natural ways to boost the cognitive abilities of people in order to save them from the side effects of those drugs and maintain moral behaviours among people.
