What is included in the "background" section of a research paper?

Solutions

Expert Solution

One of the most important elements in a research paper is the 'background' section. It provides context and important information related to the topic of the paper, and includes both relevant information as well as studies related to the same. It also connects the Introduction to the research topic, discusses the problem statement and questions. It therefore helps the reader understand the reasons for conducting the study, and helps in creating a logical flow of ideas.

To ensure that the reader understands the topic and its significance, the information in the background section should be thorough and include all details required to understand the topic in depth. It should include definitions, theories, ideas and other terms that are necessary in order to understand the rest of the paper. It should also provide a brief history of the topic and what is the significance of studying it, as well as the reasons behind its emergence. Lastly, it should also include topics or terms that are unfamiliar to the reader, or those that are borrowed from other areas of study.
