The following questions deal with domain name registration. a) What is ICANN b) what is ICANN’s UDRP
a. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN does not regulate web content. It can't avoid spam so it is not about Internet connectivity. But it does have a major effect on the growth and development of the Internet through its guiding role as the naming scheme for the Internet.
b. All registrars must follow the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (often referred to as the "UDRP"). Under the regulation, most forms of domain-name disputes based on a trademark must be settled by consent, legal proceedings, or arbitration before a registrar cancels, suspends, or moves a domain name. Disputes alleged to arise from fraudulent domain name registrations (e.g. cybersquatting) can be dealt with by expedited administrative proceedings initiated by the trademark rights holder by lodging a complaint with an accredited dispute-resolution service provider.
