Sensory impairment may affect an individual’s ability to meet their higher level needs on Maslow’s hierarchy. Provide an example of a challenge an individual with visual or hearing disturbances might have meeting their needs at each of the three higher levels: Love and belonging needs, Self-esteem needs, and Self-actualization needs. List and discuss at least one (1) nursing intervention the RN would use to assist sensory impaired individuals in meeting and achieving their challenge and/or needs at each of the three higher levels: Love and belonging needs, Self-esteem needs, and Self-actualization needs.
Examples:
1.A son not having any discussion with his father because his father is having hearing impairment .he is not ready to talk to him loudly all time.so reduce the conversation with him. Thus the elderly have a feeling of loneliness and lost love and affection from his own family.
2.A young boy got sensory impairment after an accident or injury may feel he lost his life, can't do anything independently.
3.An athlete got a visual impairment after an injury may feel they not able to show his potential due to his impairment.
Nursing Interventions:
1. Provide family counselling about the care of individual with sensory impairment.
2.Arrange small games which should be achieved by them.
3.provide some craft activities they can do.
4.Give them some responsibilities showing they are capable and make them to feel that.
5.Always get their decision show they their importance.
All these three needs if not satisfied, it lead to depression so these interventions will show their potentials and regain hope in them.
