Applying Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is also a form of
motivation in the workplace. HOW will you apply this in your
company?
One of the most popular demand theories is Abraham Maslow's
hierarchy of demand theory. Motivation is the result of one's
attempt to meet the five basic needs: physiology, social safety,
value, and self-actualization. According to Maslow, these needs can
create internal pressure that can affect one's behavior.
Physiological needs are essential for human survival: air, food,
water, shelter, clothing, and sleep. As a manager, you can take
into account the physiological needs of your employees by providing
comfortable working conditions, appropriate working hours, and the
necessary breaks for using the bathroom, eating and / or
drinking.
Security needs include those that give a person a sense of security
and well-being. Their personal security, financial security, good
health and protection from accidents, injuries and their harmful
effects are included in the safety requirements. As an
administrator, you can take into account the safety needs of your
employees by providing working conditions, safety, fair
compensation (such as salaries) and job security, which is
especially important in a bad economy.
The social need is called love and that refers to the emotional
need and acceptance. Social needs are important to people so they
do not feel isolated and depressed. Work, friendship, family and
intimacy to meet social needs. As a manager, you can take into
account the social needs of your employees by making sure each
employee knows each other, encourages the team to be approachable
and supervises and helps to improve work life balance.
The need for respect refers to the need for confidence and
self-esteem, and self-esteem is more important than gaining respect
and appreciation from others. As a manager, you can take into
account the needs of your employees' respect by giving praise and
recognition when employees do well, and by giving them more
promotion and responsibility to reflect your beliefs. That they are
valuable employees.
The need for self-actualization describes a person’s need to reach
his or her full potential. The need to be what one can do is
something very personal. Although I need to be a good parent, you
may need to have an executive role in your organization. Because
this need is individualized as a manager, you can think of this as
an effort by inviting employees to participate in the
decision-making process and providing flexibility and autonomy in
their work.
As the name of the theory suggests, Maslow believed that these
needs existed in a hierarchical order. This principle of progress
states that lower needs must be met before higher levels of demand
are met. The principle of deficit states that once the demand is
met, it is no longer a motivator, as individuals will take steps to
