Pneumonia care and the nursing home: a qualitative descriptive study of resident and family member perspectives
by Soo Chan Carusone,Mark Loeb, and Lynne Lohfeld
This qualitative study examined resident and family member perspectives on in situ care for pneumonia.
The design used was a qualitative descriptive study.Strategies used to analyse the interview data was the 'editing style' described by Miller and Crabtree, to identify key themes. The interviews were recorded and from the audiotapes, transcipts were made by a professional typist.Transcription errors were corrected by comparing with the audiotaped versions. The analysis of data from earlier transcripts were simultaneously carried out with continued data collection. This analysis had taken place in five phases. In the descriptive phase, an overall sense of the participant's views was obtained through reflexive journaling and the data was not coded. The following two phases, more detailed review of transcript is done by identifying key phrases and words. These are then clustered into themes ,linking across clusters and the data reduced. In the fourth phase, the data was coded individually by two researchers and compared their findings. In the last phase results were highlighted with supporting quotes and the findings interpreted.
In this study reliability was ensured by comparing the data analysis done by two researchers individually on the same data. The validity of the test results is demonstrated by the quotes from the original audiotapes.Although no limitations are mentioned here. The findings of this study prove to have important implications for not only future practice, but also on future research on pneumonia care for nursing home residents.
