The overall objective of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project is to meet the requirements of future nursing professionals to have the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) to maintain and or improve the quality and safety of the services provided in the health care system, for example the rehabilitation health care setting.
The rehabilitation healthcare setting provides treatment for drug abuse and addiction by means of behavioral therapy, counseling and pharmacological approaches for both the inpatients and outpatients.
In rehabilitation health care settings, along with physicians, other healthcare providers such as counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses will also participate. Different therapeutic interventions and treatment services are provided in each healthcare setting.
The knowledge, skills, and attitudes that need to be developed regarding the “patient-centered care (a concept QSEN) are given below:
(I). Knowledge:
1). Integration of multiple dimensions of patient-centered care including,
2). Examining the possibilities that help to improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare through the active involvement of patients, friends or families. Also, identifying the barriers that obstruct the active involvement of the patients in the healthcare service or healthcare process. Empowering the patients or families or friends in different aspects of the healthcare process.
3). In all health-care settings, including the rehabilitation centers, understanding the legal and ethical implications of patient-centered care, along with defining the limits of therapeutic patient-centered care is important.
(II). Skills:
(1). Ability to identify the preferences, values, and needs of the patient during the clinical evaluation and implementation of the care plan. Communicating the patient information regarding the preferences and values of the other healthcare team and providing care with sensitivity is also necessary.
(2). Assessing the emotional and physical comfort of the patient and initiating the effective treatments to provide physical and emotional relief in light of patient preferences.
(3). Identifying and removing the barriers to involve the family or friends to support the patient emotionally and to improve the safety while providing better patient care and continue the therapy.
(III). Attitudes:
(1). Observing the health care situations from the patient point of view, while allowing individual expression of patient needs, preferences, and values. Supporting the patient-centered care for those whose values differ from own.
(2). Appreciate the value of nurses role in providing relief to the patient. The active participation of family members or friends in planning, implementation, and evaluation of care plan must be valued.
(3). Respect the access of the patient to their health care records as it is their right. Acknowledging the tension that exists between professional and ethical care responsibility of the organization and the patient rights is also important.
