Expert Solution

Structured interviews are unbiased and help compare candidate skills more effectively. They help interviewer interview more number of candidates in a short span of time.

On the other hand, unstructured interviews are not systematic, but customized. The interviewer takes more time in this kind of interview, but is able to discuss to the candidate in detail, This is especially preferred for recruiting employees for higher positions in the organization. Improvisation is a part of unstructured interviews.

Following are two types of structured interviews:

  1. Close-ended questions: The answers to the questions are to the point such as a multiple-choice or a simple yes/no. There is no subjectivity to the questions and the candidate can answer them easily and directly. No explanation is expected in this case. As these are direct, they are certain and legally enforceable. These must be used in case of requirement of definite answer for example : Have you been involved in some illegal activity? Or Do you smoke?
  2. Open-ended questions: These are questions which do not have one definite answer, i.e. it may have more than one answers. These questions are complex and individual's analytical skills are most used while answering such questions. There is room for subjectivity as a particular question can be interpreted in several ways. Thus, legal implications of these can be debated. These are used where there is need for creativity and variance in answers. For example: What is your goal? What are your strengths and weaknesses.
