Structured interview- as the name indicates structured interview is interviewing the candidates based on the specifications of job requirements for the job role. There is a scale or benchmark on which all the candidates are asked the same set of questions and compared against their score. Unstructured interviews as the name indicates is unstructured in nature. The questions are based on the context and not determined in advance like that of the structured interviews.

Structured interviews improves on the shortcomings of unstructured interviews because it is highly effective because it provides accurate information making the hiring process efficient and effective. For example, there is accurate information on the behavior aspects of the potential candidates which helps the HR team to determine the right candidate fit for the role. Unstructured is more open ended and highly descriptive in nature. It also provides consistency and fairness in rating the candidates for hiring.

Example- who is the best person whom you have worked with?

Explanation of the question- This question measures the behavioral aspects of the candidate. This question measures what he/she has learnt from that person’s behavior.

Rating scale with assigned values- 1-5 (1 Excellent, 2- Very Good, 3- Good, 4-Fair, 5- Poor)

During the structured interview, the candidate is asked the above mentioned question. Then, the candidate is rated based on the rating scale. These scorings are measured with that of the candidates to determine who has obtained the highest rating. Then, the candidate who has obtained the highest rating is selected for the next round of interview or offered the job.

Note- If you like the answer, please provide an up-vote as it would be quite encouraging for me. Thank you.
