1. Based on your current understanding of the three modern theoretical perspectives (Structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionist), give a summary of each perspective. Then, explain which one you agree most with and give an example as to why you think it best explains how society works.
2. Define one quantitative research method and one qualitative research method.
3. Define social capital and cultural capital and explain how they are pivotal for low-income and minority students' educational success.
1. Structural Functionalism: This theoretical perspective explains society as functioning as a whole with constituents parts. The social institutions such as family, religion, schools functions and contribute to the functioning of the society. Structural functionalism study mainly the role of each such institutions and the functions it holds in shaping society in a particular way.
Conflict Theory: ThIs perspective explains society in terms of the class differences and the antagonism as a major cause for social change and conditions prevailing in a society. The theory sees society as inherently marked by asymmetries. The conflict theory usually studies society in terms of the antagonistic relation and the unequal distribution of opportunities.
Symbolic Interactionism: This is a micro perspective in that it deals with the face to face and symbolic meanings created in the act of interaction. Socialisation, social etiquettes and daily implicit rules of interaction forms the major point of analysis for studying society.
I agree with all the three and I think that the three are essentials for understanding society. The role and functions of social institutions also are important and at the same time differences and processes where inequalities and conflict are created is also a necessary analysis. The symbolic meanings which are associated with how we interact also contributes often on a micro level which the macro perspective fails to encompass.
