How is non-verbal communication used to demonstrate the effects of stereotype threat?
Stereotypes are referred to as the beliefs that would be associated with a particular group of people, such that these would be either positive or could be negative. These might be correct on a larger level about a particular level, at certain times, but at individual levels, these may not be correct.
Stereotyping is an easy process, and helps a person save their cognitive efforts in order to identify a or get to know their personality. Stereotyping is not only observed through words, but is also observed through gestures or non verbal communications.
Stereotype threat could be experienced such that it would affect the performance of a performance. As a result of stereotype threats there may be intrapersonal consequences. There are many cases in which stereotype threat might be present in language or body language. For example, a chief executive officer might not look directly in the eye of a female executive but would look directly in the eye of a male executive. They might tend to appoint the male executive as the leader of the group always, thinking that women may not be as competent to hold the positions.
Stereotypically women are kept at places where there would be less of a risk involved, since,, women are thought to not be competent in risk areas. Also, another form is through advertisements, where, domestic products always feature women, emphasising the fact that women are supposed to do household jobs or domestic chores.
Also, explain ego depletion effects on persuasion.
Through persuasion, there is involvement of active processes of control, which are similar in nature to self regulation. When a person resists persuasion, there are a number of factors that come into play, attitude characteristics, characteristics of the recipient of the message, ability of the receiver to be resisting persuasion. To persuasion, the most effective opposition is counter argument.
Ego depletion is the state where, the self regulation of a person is finished. This is because, volition as well as self regulation are considered under the same line. It has been estimated that if there is exertion of self regulation in one of the acts, would reduce subsequent efforts of self regulation. This results in ego depletion. Though, this is not the only reason of ego depletion. Another reason is resistance to persuasion.
Counterarguing would require active message processing, such that there would be generation of new information that should be contradictory to the already presented information, which has to be simultaneously applied to the provided message. This requires the mind to be defending attides that pre exist from being attacked. This subsequently reduces the ability of a person to keep resisting appeals ofcounter attitudes. Thus, persuasion leading to ego depletion.
