Non-verbal communication can be comprehended as a kind of communication in which wordless messages are exchanged between two persons. Such non-verbal messages involve postures, clothing, gestures, eye contact, touch, space, and facial expressions. Non-verbal messages possess the power of communicating likes, dislikes, interests, boredom, emotions, and feelings. Gestures and postures are significant non-verbal forms of communication.

A posture can be comprehended as the position in which a person maintains his or her body while standing or sitting. A posture is capable of conveying a particular approach or attitude. It can help in interpreting a person's level of attention or involvement in a task or discussion or project. It can also be vital in understanding the difference in status between communicators. It can help in estimating the extent of appeal towards the other person. Postures also help in understanding that a person is approachable, receptive, and friendly or not.

Gestures are meaningful, visible physical actions involving movements of hands, face, or any other bodily part. It is important to note that gesture processing takes place in brain areas called the Broca's area (responsible for speech production) and the Wernicke's area (responsible for speech comprehension). Gestures help in communicating both positive and negative feelings, emotions, and thoughts. Gestures may not be utilized independently. They may be utilized along with body language and speech to make the information clearer. Gesticulation and speech add more emphasis to the conveyed information and make its meaning more evident.

Examples of positive postures are sitting and walking straight and a relaxed posture while attending someone's speech or performance. Examples of negative postures are slouching, towering, jaw thrusting and arm crossing. Examples of gestures are waving arms in the air and raking fingers through the hair.

In order to better understand the two concepts of gestures and postures, they can be differentiated. A posture conveys the nature of standing and sitting, whereas gesture is a specific kind of movement of the body. A posture is generally unconscious and unintentional, whereas a gesture can be both intentional and unintentional or conscious or unconscious.
