The Olympic game started on April 06, 1986. Basketball as a sport included in the year 1936.
From the time on basketball inclusion in Olympics, the US had won all the matches except in 1972 Munich Olympics, where the Soviet Union won it for the first time beating the US with 51-50 score. It was recorded by FIBA as the first-ever loss for Team US.
The controversy surrounds within the last three seconds of the game when six seconds were left the U.S. trailing the Soviet Union 49-48. Doug Collins made both free throws to put the U.S. ahead, 50-49. Although Doug Collins an American who was expert in free throws when drives towards the basket were hammered and were nearly unconscious. There was confusion to replace Collins with the player as capable as he was, but he managed to make those historic two goals to bring the score to 50-49. There were only three seconds left to the game to get over. The Soviet coach and bench demanded that the clock should be stopped. It is entirely the violation of the Olympic rule that after a free throw it is forbidden to call timeout. There are certain rules that are to be followed before calling timeout.
The referee stops the clock claiming that there are fans on the court, actually, only the Soviet bench was on the court, the passer steps on the line but no warning call was made, his long free pass got deflected. The game was over.
At the last moment, Secretary General of FIBA overruled the official granting the Soviet team their three seconds timeout by putting three seconds back on the clock. The reason is still unknown. In these extra three seconds, the Soviet players successfully made two baskets and won the match by 51-50. Aleksandra Belov was the player making victory goal for Soviet.
Due to the controversial decision, the US team did not accept the Silver medal until now and it is lying in the museum. The American team wants their own Gold medal.
