(Answer) Gender equality in the workplace is a very general and broad aspect of human resources. The dynamics of it all depends on the country, the culture, the role of women in that particular society, their perceived role, the level of literacy and finally the atmosphere in the workplace itself.
For instance, there are countries in the east where women are expected to be limited to domestic duties and don’t have the right to an education. The west is no longer stringent about these perceptions. However, the west had a similar ideology a few centuries ago. The intriguing aspect about this is that the west managed to change gradually over the span of a few decades. Activists, artists, people in power, the people and the government collectively made efforts that managed to turn the table one degree at a time.
If one looks at gender equality in the west at the moment, the similar gradual revolution can be observed. Women are no longer limited to certain jobs and roles. Duties that were exclusive to men are now being shared by women and genders of other denominations. Women at higher managerial positions are calling out pay parity between men and women.
Furthermore, discriminatory treatment and sexual harassment in the workplace is a prominent issue that is currently being dissected through the work of Journalist Ronan Farrow for exposing the lascivious behaviour of prominent men within the entertainment industry. Tarana Burke’s “Me too” movement has resulted in a certain “overhaul” of behaviour within the workplace that has clearly been discriminatory towards women.
All of these pillars seem to mirror the activism of the past which led to the west changing its attitude towards women. Gender equality is, therefore, undergoing an evolution once again. This time, the progress is greater because these little revolutions are being reported on a global scale via new media tools. It is no longer so that a woman in the east would have to wait a few centuries longer to get the same rights as women in the west. Even though the goal of gender equality hasn’t been entirely met yet, there is a definite progress.
