Gliclazide is sold under the brand name of Diamicron.
Gliclazide is an antidiabetic medication.
Therapeutic effects:
Gliclazide stimulates the insulin release from pancreatic beta cells.
Reduces gluconeogenesis in liver.
Increases insulin sensitivity to target sites.
Side effects :
Hypoglycemia.
Abdominal pain.
Dizziness.
Heart burn, headache,nausea, vomiting.
Skin rash, swelling of tongue or lips, joint pain.
These symptoms are reported in less than 1% of people.
contraindications:
Type 1 diabetes.
Ketoacidosis.
Hypersensitivity to sulfonylureas.
Renal or hepatic failure.
Pregenency and lactation.
Nursing considerations:
Give the drug 30 min before the breakfast, if severe gi upset occurs or more than 15mg required, dose may be divided and given before meals.
Moniter urine or serum glucose levels frequently to determine the drug effectiveness and dosage.
Moniter patinet status,, ask for any adverse effects.
Donot discontinue the drug with out the advice of health care provider.
Transfer to insulin therapy incase of high stress.
Use iv glucose of severe hypoglycemia occurs as a result of over dose.
