Sternberg developed the triangular theory of love and gave seven different types of love that exist. He based each typology based on their standing on three different components: Passion, Intimacy and Commitment. One of the most important types of love he described was Friendship. This is a type of love that has the intimacy component but passion and commitment are lacking. Sternberg believes that this may serve as a root for other kinds of love. Another type of love is infatuation wherein passion is present but commitment and intimacy are absent. This is the kind of love that is present in the initial phases of a relationship. Thus, it is safe to conclude that friendship and infatuation are good starting points for a relationship.

For a relationship to be sustained in the long run, consummate love is the most effective. It is holistic in the sense that it includes all three components of love. Individuals who experience this kind of love continue to have the same level of passion even after years. They have an ever growing sense of commitment and intimacy with one another. This makes the relationship fulfilling in the long run.
