What is meant by community policing? Explain how it differs from problem-solving policing and police-community relations.
What is meant by community policing?
Community
A large group of living beings who have something in common such as principles, ethics, values, religion, interests, occupation, morals etc., They usually are grouped such that they live together or nearby.
Community Policing
Community policing is the phenomenon in which officers or law enforcement workers interact with a community on a regular basis in order to identify and solve the problems that they may be facing. The officers are themselves often a regular in the vicinity of the community.
It involves more interactions and relationship building activities with the local communities in order to gain trust and work with the communities as part of law enforcement.
Problem-solving policing
As the name suggests the aim of this kind of policing is to target a specific problem. It may be repeated occurrence in a locality that has been plaguing a community as well as the local law enforcement
Police Community Relations
Police Community Relations refers mainly to the attitudes and behaviors associated with the police behavior towards communities. It usually involves the understanding of how the behavior and attitudes of police behavior affect the perception of the community. It generally involves public relation activities.
Explain how it differs from problem-solving policing and police-community relations.
The primary differences between community policing and the other two types are policing is that community policing is more community inclusive. It encourages people of a community to be more forthcoming with their problems. There is a level of trust that can be achieved by using community policing rather than the other two methods. In spite of this, they are important too. These policing methods should be considered tools and used appropriately.
