Scenario
“Why are you giving me such a hard time about being five minutes late for our team meeting? Give me a break! You know that I have responsibilities at home, and it is hard for me to get here on time. I’m 40, and I have a wife and two small sons at home. Do you have to deal with sick kids? Do you have to arrange an emergency babysitter so you can get to class on time? Answer I
Empathetic response to the Scenario with the three step process is as follows:
I acknowledge and understand your described situation and the challenges you are facing towards work life balance. And, even not being into your shoes I can really imagine the struggles you must be going through due to these every day challenges.
Please do not be annoyed as being on time for the meeting is just the need of the business and all your efforts with respect to your work are highly regarded from my side. Also, there are no personal feeling of ill will. However, I can feel the pain you are going through with respect to organizing so many things at one time in life.
Moving forward we can try to keep 5 or 10 minutes delay sometimes in meetings a bit flexible for you. You are requested to please not make it a regular practice and keep it as an excuse for delays sometimes only. Hope our relationship builds on the trust factor for sharing any kind of challenges we face and can resolve together. Please let me know if i can be of any support to you.
Answer Part II - Once you have written your response, answer the following questions:
1. Did you find it hard to provide empathetic responses? Why or why not?
2. What step was the most difficult?
3. When would you most likely use the skill of empathy?
4. Can one make a mistake when using empathy?
Answers:
1. No, it is not hard to provide empathetic response. But, yes the language should be a bit tricky so that the person receiving the response should be felt understood and supported.
2. The opening line of the response was the most difficult as it should make the receiver a bit calm down and keep reading.
3. Whenever anyone reaches to me with any issue or problem or any complex situation related to work or personal life.
4. Yes, sometimes people make mistake when using empathy by not showing the other person that they are able to understand their problem or by arguing with them over their problem.
