During my work with a government educational institute, I was deputed by the government to a far flung area to supervise the semester examination in a privately run college for the running semester. It is an incident of a developing nation where law and order are in much need of improvement and corruption is rampant. The director of college wanted me to be "lenient" towards some of his favourite students, who would "do some copying" to get better grades which would help them in their placement. " Please don't refuse for this noble work as it is a question of their career" he added. I was to be a proud owner of a electric scooter if I agreed to his demand. He listed out the names of examiners who did the work in previous semesters, and agreed to the demand. I rememberd that I knew two of them and they actually owned electric scooters and the date of "purchase" actually coincided by the previous semester exam. I had no intentions to be a member of this "roll of honour" and refused. The director tried to convince me but I was adament. I told him that I wanted to meet those privileged students and hold a one day session for them. They arrived at the scheduled date and time. I counseled them about the ill effects of dependency on unfair means such as copying and told them that in the exam of life, there will be no copies and chits, and there will be no re-exams as well. Barring two, all were convinced. On their demand, I arranged for few lectures by one of my friends, Percy, a teacher of mathematics who cleared much of their doubts. This subject was biggest hurdle which stood between them and free and fair exams, which eventually took place as I wanted, probably for the first time in recent times. Next month, I received a letter of thanks from all of them, as they got reasonably good marks. The "scheme" of electric scooters was withdrawn for good. Some colleagues criticised me for depriving future deputees from these "gifts", but it does not matter for me.
