(1A) Describe each domain of development (language, cognitive, physical and social/emotional) for a child who is 8 years of age.
(1B) As an adult working with this child create an age appropriate activity for each domain of development (1 for language, 1 for cognitive, 1 for physical, and 1 for social/emotional) that would support the child’s growth.
(1C) What is the adult’s role during the activities to promote optimal learning?
(1A) Describe each domain of development (language, cognitive, physical and social/emotional) for a child who is 8 years of age.
Language development:
An 8-year-old child, typically in third grade, will continue to develop more complex language skills. Their focus and attention span improve. They will improve pronunciation and learn to follow more commands in a row than they could at age 7. Reading skills become more sophisticated.
Cognitive development:
At this age, Child should be at the
"concrete operations" stage of Piaget's cognitive development
theory, characterized by the ability to use logical and coherent
actions in thinking and solving problems. They understand the
concepts of permanence and conservation by learning that volume,
weight, and numbers may remain constant despite changes in outward
appearance. These children should be able to build on past
experiences, using them to explain why some things happen. Their
attention span should increase with age, from being able to focus
on a task for about 15 minutes to an hour.
Physical development
Most children by age 8: Grow about 2.5 in. (6 cm) and gain about 7 lb (3 kg) in a year. May have arms and legs that seem too long for their bodies.
Emotional / Social Development:
An 8-year-old may show more sophisticated and complex emotions and interactions. 3 Most are able to mask their true thoughts or emotions to spare someone's feelings. For example, a child who doesn't like a present may still smile and thank the gift giver.
(1B) As an adult working with this child create an age appropriate activity for each domain of development (1 for language, 1 for cognitive, 1 for physical, and 1 for social/emotional) that would support the child’s growth.
Language Development activity: Narrating a story
Cognitive development activity: Calculation of basic math problems such as addition, subtraction etc.
Physical development activity: Running and swimming
Emotional / Social Development activity: Participation in plays or skits along with peers and friends.
(1C) What is the adult’s role during the activities to promote optimal learning?
(1)Supporting the child in all of these developmental spheres.
(2)Focusing on all round development of the child
(3)Praising and motivating the child to boost their confidence and morale, even if they are not doing well in their studies.
(4)Maintaining proper time table and schedule for their child so that they may focus.
(5)Arranging proper atmosphere for the child development.
(6)Giving nutritional food and balanced diet to the child.
