Organizational development is a critical tool in today’s ever-changing business environment. It is a systematic and planned technique where changes and improvements in organizational processes and structures are carried out to enhance productivity and achieve greater efficiencies. For example, in the HR department, organizational development includes improvement in various processes such as recruitment, talent management, performance evaluation, appraisal, etc.

The developmental process begins with identification of the problem, by talking to employees, customers, suppliers, etc. A formal assessment of the situation is then carried out by analysing the gathered information. A plan of action is formulated to deal with the problem. The plan is then implemented across the organization. If required, training programs may also be undertaken to implement the plans. After the changes have been implemented, data is gathered to understand the effectiveness of the plan. Results are analysed and feedback is gathered from all relevant parties. The entire process may be repeated or additional changes may be incorporated till a positive impact is noticed. Thus the development process is a continuous performance improvement cycle.

The primary uses of organizational development are to improve the organization’s performance by supporting the growth of its employees. If implemented correctly, organizational development can also help in increased communication among different departments of the organization, improves product attributes and services, result in higher profits, etc.
