Name two adaptations that allow for the external development of a sexually reproducing organism

Solutions

Expert Solution

There are different types of adptations in different species, which permit the external development of a sexually reproducing organism and maximize biological fitness. These adaptations include parental investment, direct male competition and indirect male competition.

For example:-The midwife toad and Alytes obstetricans, carry the fertilized eggs on his hind legs until they are ready to hatch.

Many amphibians, individual males court individual females to release the eggs, at same time the males release the sperms to fertilize the eggs.

compare and contrast the biology of a sexually reproducing organism with another asexually reproducing organism. Or alternatively, find an organism that makes use of both forms of reproduction. For each organism, describe how their reproductive system works and speculate what environmental or social factors might influence this reproductive strategy. For at least one organism, you should also post a link to a popular science article/Wikipedia entry/ and/or video for your classmates to check out. (200-300 words)

 (a) Consider a somatic cell taken from a sexually-reproducing organism. If this cell is resting, or performing the normal functions of the cell, but not going through cell division, how many versions of each type of chromosome would it contain? You discover a novel unicellular, sexually reproducing organism. The ‘A’ (or ‘a’) locus is 38 map units away from the ‘B’ (or ‘b’) locus. Suppose that ‘A’ encodes cilia that help the cell to move (and is dominant to ‘a’ which is incapable of moving) and that ‘B’ encodes ability to perform photosynthesis (and is dominant to ‘b’ which is incapable of photosynthesis). If you cross an individual that has ‘AB’ together on a single chromosome and ‘ab’ on the homologous...

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of populations of sexually reproducing organisms over populations of asexually reproducing organisms. Also, include the following in your original post: • Address this from a molecular perspective as well as from a larger, environmental perspective. • Describe the two events that are common to all sexually reproducing organisms and how they fit into the different life cycles of those organisms. • Highlight three specific examples of reproduction from your text.
