What would happen to a sexually reproducing organism if there were no reduction in chromosome number during meiotic division? Give an example

Solutions

Expert Solution

If there were no reduction in chromosome number during meiotic division, then during reproduction it will give rise to a completely different species as the chromosome number of the offspring will be different from its parents.

For an example, suppose a species A, that can reproduce sexually and whose chromosome number is 12, undergoes meiosis such that the gametes have a chromosome number of 6 in one parent. But since the other parent will not reduce chromosome number after meiosis the chromosome number at the end of meiosis remains 12. During mating, and sexual reproduction, the gametes from both parents will fuse to give a zygote whose chromosome number will be 18 (6+12). This zygote will be completely different from both of the parents and might not be viable.

compare and contrast the biology of a sexually reproducing organism with another asexually reproducing organism. Or alternatively, find an organism that makes use of both forms of reproduction. For each organism, describe how their reproductive system works and speculate what environmental or social factors might influence this reproductive strategy. For at least one organism, you should also post a link to a popular science article/Wikipedia entry/ and/or video for your classmates to check out. (200-300 words)

You discover a novel unicellular, sexually reproducing organism. The ‘A’ (or ‘a’) locus is 38 map units away from the ‘B’ (or ‘b’) locus. Suppose that ‘A’ encodes cilia that help the cell to move (and is dominant to ‘a’ which is incapable of moving) and that ‘B’ encodes ability to perform photosynthesis (and is dominant to ‘b’ which is incapable of photosynthesis). If you cross an individual that has ‘AB’ together on a single chromosome and ‘ab’ on the homologous...
