Consider a multi-cellular, sexually reproducing organism. Comparing the following pair of phenomena, which is most likely to be associated with evolutionary change in a population and (briefly) why? "Variation in a vestigial trait vs. variation in a trait that influences reproductive success"

Solutions

Expert Solution

Vestigial traits are those that are inherited from the ancestor, which probably loss their functional ability in the descendants. Variation in these traits is not typically associated with the evolutionary change.

However, the variation in reproductive success is associated with the evolutionary change because the natural selection always favours the success of sexual reproduction and survival of an organism. So, a variation in a trait that influences reproductive success is associated with the evolutionary change in population.

compare and contrast the biology of a sexually reproducing organism with another asexually reproducing organism. Or alternatively, find an organism that makes use of both forms of reproduction. For each organism, describe how their reproductive system works and speculate what environmental or social factors might influence this reproductive strategy. For at least one organism, you should also post a link to a popular science article/Wikipedia entry/ and/or video for your classmates to check out. (200-300 words)
