  • Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) differed from the other mainstream therapies of its day, mainly in the importance it placed on discussing and adapting how clients think. Not only does REBT rest on the belief that the way we think influences our emotions and behavior, it attempts to help clients change the way they think to reduce negative symptoms and improve their quality of life.Ellis theorized that many of our emotional and behavioral problems spring from basic irrational assumptions, or assumptions that are not totally grounded in reality and influence people to act in ways that are inappropriate, unhelpful, or even destructive.
  • REBT helps clients confront negative and irrational automatic thoughts or beliefs. It encourages the use of reason and rationality to replace old, self-critical beliefs with new, more positive and more functional beliefs.
  • Psychoanalysis didn’t consider the client’s way of thinking to be especially problematic; instead, it aimed to penetrate the unconscious mind.
  • Sigmund Freud believed that adults seduced children and this is where their problems came up in adulthood. As for all things, many people did not agree with Freud’s theory. “Freud believed that people could be cured by making conscious their unconscious thoughts and motivations, thus gaining insight”, According to Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory, there are three elements of personality the id, ego and superego. The id is an individual’s inner child. He believed everyone is born with the id. All humans when they are babies, according to Freud, are pleasure seeking and concerned with having their needs met. This is the original or unconscious personality. The ego is where decision-making occurs, judgments are made and memory is stored. Lastly, the superego contains the individual’s values, beliefs, and morals, which they get from their parents.
  • While, Ellis’ theory focuses on what the client thinks rather than what they do. He believes that irrational thinking leads to irrational behaviour while Freud believes that childhood experiences have an affect on behaviour.
  • Psychoanalysis lacks the scientific approach and research orientation of medicine.REBT addresses the philosophic basis of emotional disturbance as well as the distorted cognitions.
