Think about how notions of social acceptability change. Identify what you would find shocking or unacceptable on stage. If you have not seen much theatre, imagine how you would feel seeing it live. Is there a difference between what you would accept on stage and on film/TV (for example, profanity, nudity, realistic violence, presentational violence)?
Notions of social acceptability is constantly changing, thus what was unacceptable yesterday becomes acceptable today and what is acceptable today becomes unacceptable tomorrow. For example all the civil rights, racial equality, etc. are examples how the notions of acceptability kept changing in the society. Similarly, in media and theatre, things kept changing such as the amount of violence to be shown, nudity, sex, profanity etc. were accepted over a period of time with the ‘A’ certificate. I don’t think there needs to be a difference but in terms of nudity and profanity, theatres do not show but in terms of violence, they are ok with it. Theatres, TV programmes and movies all have grown tremendously not only technologically but also in content, presentation, etc. Most of the ideological life style is propagated through popular media. In general, most of the things are allowed in TV and movies with the warning of who will view them but in theatre, nudity, sex and false language is still not present.
