Q1: what do we do with the sludge resulted from waste water treatment process ? Can we use it to make mony ? How?

Q2: Do you support treated waste water and treated sludge to be used in agriculture to grow crops? Why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer.1

There are two method that may be used for sludge resulting from waste water treatment process

a. Dilution or Disposal in water : Sludge is discharged into a large body of water, such as river, lake or sea .After some time of discharging sludge it is purified by process which is self purification process of natural waters. However some amount of treatment is done to raw sludge which depends on degree of self purification. However U.S.A has banned disposal of sludge in sea inrecent times while in some countries it is still prevalent.

B. Disposal on land: Sludge is buried deep in the ground or applied on land and used for irrigating crops which help increasing yield by 30% or more.Sludge contains fertilising elements like potash, phosphate, nitrogen etc. But it is not used in the fields having crops which is eaten raw or doesn't have any skin to remove before cooking like tomato, spinach etc

Yes we can use it to make money-

Sludge can be transformed into biogas which is a source of green energy, this conversion can create a new revenue stream by selling it to local grid

Answer2.

Yes I support use of treated waste water and waste water sludge to be used in agriculture If it is checked for quality standards like BOD5 ,ph value, TDS, Radioactive minerals etc. It increases the yield of crops significantly. It could not used for crops which are eaten raw or doesn't have skin to peel before cooking. Clayey lands should be avoided ,land should be sandy or loamy to avoid sewage sickness.

A 100-mL water sample is collected from the activated sludge process of municipal wastewater treatment. The sample is placed in a drying dish (weight = 0.5000 g before the sample is added), and then placed in an oven at 104°C until all the moisture is evaporated. The weight of the dried dish is recorded as 0.5625 g. A similar 100-mL sample is filtered and the 100-mL liquid sample that passes through the filter is collected and placed in another drying...
