What are the definition and examples of Quid pro quo sexual harassment. Especially in todays scociety
'Quid pro quo' has its origins in Latin and it means 'something in exchange for something'. It is a workplace harassment scenario in which a person who is in power or an authority figure, assures an employee of financial or promotional gains in exchange for a sexual favour. Such sexual favours can be interpreted through unwanted sexual advances or obscene comments made to the employee.
Quid pro quo sexual harassment can be understood from the following examples-
1) When the manager asks for sexual favours in return for providing promotions to the employee.
2) When the person in charge makes sexual advances towards an employee and threatens to demote or fire them if they do not comply with their needs. This makes the victims vulnerable as they fear losing everything that they might have worked very hard for over the years. They may also face the threat of having their image tarnished by the employer if they resist those advances and may never be hired again by any other company.
3) The hiring manager of a company asking for sexual gratification in exchange for employing a particular candidate.
4) A manager providing a bonus or a holiday for an employee with the expectation of sexual favours in return.
5) A manager providing a positive review of the performance of an employee on the condition of receiving sexual favours.
6) A manager threatening to change the department of work of the employee if they do not engage in sexual activities.
