Use the five-step decision-making process discussed in Chapter 1
to analyze the following situations and recommend a course of
action.
1- You work part-time evenings and weekends as a real estate
salesperson. You also work full-time for an IT consulting group.
When ordering business cards for your real estate business, you
decided to include your full-time work email address. As a result,
you frequently find yourself receiving and sending emails related
to your real estate work from your computer at your IT consulting
job. You try to limit this activity to your lunch hour, but there
are often urgent messages that require an immediate reply. Lately
the number of such emails is increasing. Sometimes you worry what
would happen if your manager found out about this activity, but
cutting off the flow of emails from your clients could have a
serious impact on your ability to serve them and earn commissions.
What should you do?
Notes:
The five-step is :
( Problem definition -Identify alternative -Choose
alternative-Develop implementation-Evaluate the result)
answer by using your own words please ..
the name of course is "Professional Computing Issues"
* INDENTIFY THE
PROBLEM
- First of all, in general, we will have to think that what is the
problem so that we can better plan and prepare. In our case, the
problem is exposing out the official emai ID to the clients is the
issue. I did not give a thought through about the consequences it
might have later on. Problem is maintaining the balance
between the regular IT work and part time tasks and keeping them
independent.
* Choosing the available
options.
- Since I have given my work email ID and there is a
pressure on me to maintain the independence of my two different
tasks, I need to check as how can I do that. I have the below
options.
- Tell boss about it before he knows
himself.
- Tell clients to stop mailing them on that
address.
- Set up automated emails for any external domain to your
personal email address.
* Consider the
consequences
- Here, we will look for the consequences for the
chosen options.
- Tell boss about it before he knows himself ->
This option might make a negative impact of your image in your boss
perspective as any legitimate delay in your tasks would be
considered as lack of interest in JOB
- Tell clients to stop mailing them on that address
-> Since, there is a huge competetion in sales, this
might result in loss of client and loss of commission.
- Set up automated emails for any external domain to your
personal email address -> The organisation might have a
filter on the emails as a part of data protection and I can be
questioned as to why I forwared the mails to my personal mail
address.
* Make the
decision
Now, we have three options in front of
us which we gave some thought through as to what their consequences
can be.
- I personally feel, I can go with option 3 Set up
automated emails for any external domain to your personal email
address . It is so because, these kinds of audits happen
very infrequently and you can always justify your redirectional as
you were receiving many spam emails and did not want the official
email/company's data to be compromised
* Evaluate the
decision
- Taking this decision, I have made sure that none of my tasks are
affected. I am still working for my IT company with same level of
dedication and in my free time I am handling my sales clients to
get some extra source of income. Either of them is not aware about
the decision that I had to take and there was a predicament in
front of me.
I could now get my regular commission from part time job and still
has my boss confidence.
