Use the five-step decision-making process discussed in Chapter 1 to analyze the following situations and recommend a course of action. (Choose one case only)
1- You work part-time evenings and weekends as a real estate salesperson. You also work full-time for an IT consulting group. When ordering business cards for your real estate business, you decided to include your full-time work email address. As a result, you frequently find yourself receiving and sending emails related to your real estate work from your computer at your IT consulting job. You try to limit this activity to your lunch hour, but there are often urgent messages that require an immediate reply. Lately the number of such emails is increasing. Sometimes you worry what would happen if your manager found out about this activity, but cutting off the flow of emails from your clients could have a serious impact on your ability to serve them and earn commissions. What should you do?
2- The daughter of the firm’s CEO is scheduled to participate in a job interview for an entry level position in the IT organization next week. You are a second-year employee in your firm’s IT organization who will participate in the interview process. You will be one of three people who will interview her to form an assessment and make a group decision about whether or not she will be offered the position. How do you handle this situation?

Expert Solution

I am providing my own answer. I am choosing option based on my idea. You can customize accordingly

Step 1: Problem Definition

I am working as an employee of the organization who has stepped into second year in the firm. The firm's CEO's daughter is going to appear for the interview for entry-level position and I am going to interview her. How am I going to handle the situation

Step 2: Identify alternative

a) Ask easy question to CEO's daughter and select her: Since I want to continue in the same organization, I will select her by asking easy question, so that both CEO and CEO's daughter will get impressed and keep me on job and I may get many new offers and promotion from the company

b) Take leave: Take leave so that I can escape from the process of conducting interview so that neither I want to impress my CEO in a wrong way nor to loose job (fear that CEO may throw me out since I dint select his daughter)

c) Withdraw from the Interview process: Inform to my superior that I am going to withdraw from the process of interviewing candidate since I am afraid of interviewing my CEO's daughter.

d) Conduct the interview as normal to CEO's daughter like other candidate: Conduct the interview as usual as equal to the other candidate as per the norms of the company.

Step 3: Choose Alternative

I am going to choose option D.

Reason: Candidates are to be treated equally. Any company needs potential candidate who can support the organization and grow along with the organization. So we should never mind whether the candidate is someone else or CEO's daughter. So there is no partiality and she has to be interviewed as per the norms of the company.

  • Plan questions appropriately to test the skills of the candidate which would help me to pick the right candidate.
  • Plan rubrics against the expectation of the company which would help me to select the right candidate.

Step 4: Develop implementation

  • Interview all the candidates in the usual way.
  • Use the questions planned in Step 3 and find who throws light on the question.
  • Have necessary stationeries to note down the performance of the candidate.
  • Analyse the performance of the candidate to obtain Skills, nowledge and Attitude.

Step 5: Result

  • Candidates will be short-listed based on the pointers which I have noted in Step 4
  • I would inform about the selected candidate and will also state the reason why they are selected.
  • I would also inform to the candidates who are not eligible by stating the right reason so that they can improve their profile and can try better or matching opportunities. This one I feel very significant in the process of interview

If CEO's daughter has performed well, then she would have been selected.
