Historical examples of media impact

Political influence: Trump-Russia Election Scandal (Facebook)

McLuhan's idea of media as an extension of ourselves fits exactly in this case. The influence of social media ad campaigns and using our data to show exactly what we expect in order to win our votes. The impact of social media could not get better than this. The fact that another country altogether is involved in influencing elections in the United States of America is totally mind boggling and shows the huge impact that media has on us.

The Haiti Earthquake Relief (Twitter)

When the earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, people were devastated. But more than that one could witness humanity in the form of aid. The record timing and collection of fund and resources to help the affected was nothing short of a miracle of the media. If not for Twitter and how we perceived the information, it could have been an even worse disaster.

Entertainment: Binge watching (Youtube)

All of us would remember that funny video (E.g., Charlie bit my finger) on YouTube. It had influenced people so much that people started coming up with TV shows focussed on funny videos. Thousands on channels sprung up to provide funny content. It led to a great business and is the livelihood of many people today. If not for Youtube many people would be jobless today. Media's impact is such that it is creating jobs as we've never seen before.
