Environmental impacts of mining can occur at local, regional, and global scales through direct and indirect mining practices. Impacts can result in erosion, sinkholes, biodiversity, contamination of soil, ground water and surface water by the chemicals emitted from mining processes. These processes also have an impact on the atmosphere from the emissions of carbon which have effect on the quality of human health and biodiversity. Some mining methods may have such significant environmental and public health effects that mining companies in some countries are required to follow strict environmental and rehabilitation codes to ensure that the mined area returns to its original state.

Water-pollution problems caused by mining include acid mine drainage, metal contamination, and increased sediment levels in streams. Sources can include active or abandoned surface and underground mines, processing plants, waste-disposal areas, haulage roads, or tailings ponds

To decrease risks due to mining

  • Reclamation
  • Soil treatment
  • Water treatment
  • Preventing acid rock damage
  • Controlling gas emission
  • Reduce inputs. The mining industry uses a large amount of water and land in their operations.
  • Reduce outputs.
  • Proper waste disposal.
  • Improving the manufacturing process.
  • Close and reclaim shut-down mines.
  • Replenishing the environment

Humans are also affected by mining. There are many diseases that can come from the pollutants that are released into the air and water during the mining process. Most of miners suffer from various respiratory and skin diseases such as asbestosis, silicosis, or black lung disease.

PRECAUTIONS TAKEN BY THE WORKERS IN MINING

. Don't Ignore the Danger.

  • Dangerous Tasks Require Planning and Communication.
  • Get Professional Training.
  • Always Wear Safety Equipment.
  • Supervise Your Team.
  • Document Your Safety Procedures.
  • Follow the Latest Safety Standards.
