Expert Solution

PROTEIN METABOLISM

Protein metabolism can be divided into-

  1. Protein Synthesis
  2. Protein Targeting and Degradation.

1. Protein synthesis-

The protein is synthesized into to steps- Transcription and translation.

  • Transcription-

  • Translation-

The summary of protein synthesis is given below:-

2. Protein Targeting and Degradation-

The protein sorting or the protein targeting is a mechanism that transports proteins to their suitable destinations inside or outside the cell. Proteins can be delivered to different intracellular membranes, the exterior of the cell, the inner space of an organelle, plasma membrane through secretion.

The levels of proteins within cells are circumscribed by both the rates of synthesis and the rates of degradation. The differential rates of the degradation of protein are crucial for cell regulation. Several proteins that are rapidly degraded work as transcription factors. The immediate turnover of these proteins is essential to let their levels change rapidly in the presence of external stimuli. The damaged or faulty are identified and quickly degenerated within cells, thus, reducing the outcomes of errors made at the time of protein synthesis. The two main pathways in eukaryotic cells to mediate protein degradation are- lysosomal proteolysis and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

The summary of protein synthesis is given below:-
