What is wrong?

1. PTH is made by the thyroid gland.

2. There is an increased excretion of zinc during stress and high carbohydrate intake.

3. Heme iron can be found in mushrooms.

4. Hemochromatosis causes an iron deficiency.

5. Metallothionein regulates the absorption of iron.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1.PTH is made by the thyroid gland - PTH i.e parathyroid hormone is not made by thyroid gland,it is secreted by Parathyroid gland. Thyroid gland secretes triiodothyronine (T3) ,thyroxine (T4) and calcitonin

2.There is an increased excretion of zinc during stress and high carbohydrate intake - It is incorrect because carbohydrate are low in zinc. Starvation and muscle catabolism can increase excretion zinc.

3. Heme iron can be found in mushrooms - It is incorrect because mushrooms are high source of non heme iron. The animal sources are high in heme iron.

4. Hemochromatosis causes an iron deficiency - It is incorrect because hemochrmatosis is a condition where too much iron builds up in the body. So it does not causes deficiency,it causes iron-overload.

5. Metallothionein regulates the absorption of iron - It is incorrect because metallothionein is important for zinc and copper hemeostasis. Hepcidin and ferroportin, which are found in liver regulates the absorbtion of iron.

The greatest concentration of iodine in the body is in the thyroid gland, so radioactive iodine-131 is often used as a tracer to help diagnose thyroid problems. Suppose the activity of 131I in a patient’s thyroid is initially 1.85 × 106 Bq. 131I decays via beta radiation with an average energy of 180.0 keV per decay.
